IUE Environment Commission

Sustainability and environmental considerations in leather manufacture.

The IUE Environment Commission promotes the development of sound environmental practices across the global leather sector through science, technical guidance and international collaboration.

Working with member societies, researchers, industry and regulatory stakeholders, the Commission develops reference documents addressing key environmental issues affecting leather manufacture, including by-product utilisation, salinity management, resource efficiency and sustainability.

Current Activities

The Commission is currently undertaking a comprehensive revision of two important IUE reference documents:

  • IUE 2 – Solid By-products: reviewing the management and valorisation of tannery by-products within a circular economy framework.
  • IUE 3 – Total Dissolved Solids (TDS): updating international guidance on salinity management, source reduction strategies and environmental assessment.

Both documents are progressing through peer review and are intended to provide internationally recognised technical guidance for industry, regulators and other stakeholders.

Recent Commission Activity

  • Revision of IUE 2 and IUE 3 underway.
  • Review of international literature, standards and regulatory frameworks completed.
  • Peer review process initiated within the Commission, with external expert input being sought where appropriate.

The IUE Commission welcomes scientific collaboration and technical contributions from the international leather community as these documents continue towards publication.
