IUR Research Commission

Research coordination and scientific exchange.

The IUR Research Commission promotes international collaboration in leather science by supporting research excellence, scientific exchange and the development of future leaders within the global leather sector.

The Commission encourages innovation across leather chemistry, materials science, sustainability, digitalisation and manufacturing technology, while fostering cooperation between universities, research institutes and industry.

Young Leather Scientist Grants (YLSG)

The IULTCS Young Leather Scientist Grants (YLSG) recognise outstanding research by students and early-career scientists working in leather-related disciplines. The programme provides international recognition and financial support while encouraging participation in the IULTCS World Congress.

Applications are invited from researchers under the age of 35 undertaking innovative projects in leather science and technology, supervised by an academic institution or recognised research organisation.

Current award categories include:

  • Basic Leather Research – collagen science, leather chemistry, analytical methods and innovation.
  • Sustainability & Environmental Research – sustainable processing, alternative chemistries, waste reduction and environmental performance.
  • Machinery & Digitalisation – process optimisation, automation, digital technologies and advanced manufacturing.

Current Activity

Promotion of the Young Leather Scientist Grants 2027 is currently underway, with member societies, universities and research organisations encouraged to nominate outstanding young researchers from around the world.

The Commission is also reviewing the Machinery Award criteria to encourage broader participation and continues to strengthen international engagement through collaboration with academic institutions and national leather societies.

Researchers interested in the YLSG programme are encouraged to contact their national member society or the IUR Commission for further information.
